Immigrant New Yorker Story
Story from The New York Daily News. Lana (whom the story is about) is my sisters good friend Daves girlfriend. I have met Lana on a couple of occasions, and didn't know much about her, let alone her story. Hearing this story makes me want to ask her a million questions.
-----------
'Haven't you had enough of politics?' by Jeff Tamarkin
When Lana Obradovic announced that she wanted to study politics in college, her mother was more than a little shocked. "Haven't you had enough of politics?" she asked her daughter.
It was a valid question. Obradovic, her younger sister and their mother had narrowly escaped Bosnia in the early 1990s during the turbulent period when ethnic cleansing was rampant in the former Yugoslavia.
Several of their relatives, along with tens of thousands of others, were killed and many more displaced during the civil wars that tore apart the Balkan region.
Today, Obradovic's mother better understands her daughter's decision - she recently turned 30 but she's adjunct professor in political science at three city institutions of higher learning: Hunter College, St. John's University and Queens College.
"I wanted to understand what happened to me," says Obradovic when asked why she pursued the study of politics. "How can a country or a family or an individual go from having a happy life to overnight having everything taken away?"
Obradovic, speaking at the CUNY Graduate Center, not far from her midtown apartment, was living what she describes as a happy childhood in the city of Mostar when the violence turned her life upside down.
Her father, who passed away from cancer during that same period, was a filmmaker and theater director, and her mother an art critic.
"They were intellectuals who dragged me from one play to another, and from one exhibit to another," says Obradovic. "I guess that background did not allow me to see what was coming because my parents were oblivious to it."
Then, she continues, "On April 6, 1992, the bombing of my hometown started. The first night we found ourselves in the basement of our condominium. We knew the situation was tense but nobody knew it was going to go that far. From then on it was clear there was no going back."
The following June, using faked papers, the two girls and their mother managed to cross the border into Croatia. It was a risky move. "If [caught] they'd send us back and we'd be in so much more trouble. It's not just being deported, it's being deported to hell," says Obradovic.
After a few weeks, mother and daughters hooked up with an organization that helped them get to Italy. They spent 16 months there - Obradovic, who spoke no Italian, attended high school in the foreign country. Their next stop was Lincoln, Neb., where Obradovic had cousins.
Arriving in late 1994, she finished high school there. Then, on a scholar-ship, Obradovic attended the University of Nebraska. That's when she broke the news that she wanted to pursue an education in politics.
"The day after we left Mostar, our house was taken away, my dad's books were thrown out in the garbage.
I just wanted to understand why, at the end of the 20th century, something like that was happening."
After graduating college, Obradovic, who speaks with almost no trace of a European accent today, came to New York to study for her master's degree at St. John's. "I got a 4.0 [grade point average]. I really enjoyed the program and worked my butt off," she says.
O bradovic was offered a job at the school, as the assistant director of a program that promotes higher education in immigrant, minority and low-income communities. She kept that job for three years. Then one day she ran into one of her professors, the chairman of the school's Government and Politics department.
"She said, 'I need somebody to teach the class. You graduated with honors, could you do that?'" Still in her 20s and a resident of the United States for less than a decade, Obradovic began teaching college courses in New York City.
Among the courses she offers today are current terrorist movements, the Middle East, U.S. foreign policy, political leadership and an introduction to international relationships.
Some days find her commuting between all three schools.
Obradovic's students, according to one Web site on which professors are rated, find her engaging, fun and dedicated.
"She continually strived to better her students and developed many innovative and creative ways to ensure that her students excelled," Thomas Locascio of the St John's class of 2005, said via e-mail.
"Her wealth of knowledge and inspiring life experiences make her a truly remarkable individual who stands to serve as a role model."
Obradovic hopes her students will come away from her classes under-standing that "their voices matter, and that politics matters," she says.
"If they don't like something, it is their responsibility to act upon that. If you have a problem, step up to the plate. What have you done about it? Have you gotten involved in somebody's campaign? Get an internship. Do something if you don't agree. I want to convey my passion for politics with them."

I CAN'T GO ANYWHERE IN PARK SLOPE!
ONCE upon a time I was known as the "mayor of park slope." I even had a sheriff.
Every night I would comb the streets looking for trouble. My shift was 5pm-5am. Nurse Hours. long hours. unforgettable hours. I got to know a lot of people/places/things:
gays, hags, straights, gays scared straight, O'connors, homies, homeless, regulars, regulators, long tan, bartenders, barstools, strollers, fences, guitar players, card players, great lakes, rooftops, 200 5th, bagels, trendoids, headbangers, and of course huggers.
I didn't officially resign, and I don't know who took my place, I would rather not.
But when I hit the streets I can't go anywhere without someone wanting to buy me a drink. (this is highly exaggerated.) and of course this leads to a drunk mayor. 3 pints at the gate,

a joint and a six pack on a rooftop, another couple at the smack shack (aka Cattyshack), another at the sheep station (australian for beer), chips and salsa at Calexico, and stumble my way home.
And Stumble my way home....
stumble..
home.
NO wonder I have been hanging out in Williamsburg a lot lately.
I don't know ANYONE!!

Guess the rockstar revealed:
Since this one was two easy...No, sister it was not Chris Robinson (???)
I have to really think about the next.
Here is Kurt Cobain at the "Smells like teen Spirit" video shoot with the basketball hoop in the background. - the green shirt gave it away.

"My whole existence is for your amusement And that is why I'm here with you."

T-SHIRTS
I have always made t-shirts since I was 15. I had to represent my favorite bands in high school, because either I couldn't find them at my local independent record store OR they were X-LARGE. I did have a couple that my brother brought me from road trips (concerts) he saw - but mostly it was a white t shirt and a magik marker.
now with the help of the internet I can get that Bikini Kill t shirt i wanted since i was a teenager. but I still make my own. Here are some below:

I have many more in the works...sonic youth, wipers, x ray spex, sleater kinney, built to spill etc, but I need suggestions - maybe for your birthday presents!?

3 FROM THE TURTLE
1. DRUNK - SILKWORM
This band takes me back to 2000, when I was writing for GhettoBlaster Magazine. The other writers, editors where waaaay into this band. And being a Montana native how could I not be as well!
My sister recently spun at _________ in Denver and she put this on her playlist. Good one to spin. Simple song - another one where the guitar really structures the song, especially towards the end, the end of the night, where everyone is drunk, including the guitar.
Here are two excerpts from their tour journals through out the years that I thought were funny:
09-03-1998
Butte, Montana, The Capri Motel
"Not much to write about today. Butte is like a truck stop. People here are truck stop people. I'm sorry, that sounds bad. Ha ha! The town is, you know, sorta trashy. But please understand that the architecture is alarmingly lovely and well-preserved. There is a perfectly restored 24-room turn-of-the-century victorian mansion overlooking Butte which is available for $180,000. Perhaps it can be disassembled and moved to a different location which has perhaps a little more... culture."
11-14-2003
Brooklyn, North Six
The most stunning experience of the day was seeing Williamsburg, Brooklyn after many years of absence. It's as if hipster NYC has become a crack cocaine, an urban blight that can descend on a community like a terrible infestation, driving out all indigenous elements (nail salons, cheap coffee, inexpensive housing, people with accents) in a matter of years or even months. Five years ago Williamsburg was a cheap-artist's-lofts kind of a place, so maybe you could see what was coming. But it was so sudden! And so complete! When I heard we were playing in Brooklyn I had my doubts - who would come to Brooklyn for a rock show? But we entered Williamsburg and realized: they're already here. The streets of Williambsburg are packed with hipsters. Packed! Restaurants and bars and coffee shops and halogen-lit delis, unlimited options for fresh-squeezed carrot juice, hot & skinny hepcats trolling for their kin... crazy. I have never seen such a transformation.

R.I.P Drummer Michael Dahlquist
2. YES ANASTASIA - TORI AMOS
A 9 minute epic from Queen Bee Tori. From "Under the Pink" Remember "God sometimes you just don't come through.." Wow. You have no idea how many arguments I got into with my highschool classmates about that song. We went to a private Catholic school so use your imagination! Anyway back to "Yes Anastasia" the piano on this song is passionate! Strong and delicately teetering between sane and insane. And then the orchestra kicks in! As always tori's lyrics make no sense, but with her humor you tend to forget, "Her blood's on my hands, its kind of a shame cause I did like that dress."

3. I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU - AL GREEN
What a voice. And the Greatest Hits album cover is one of my favorites. I don't know why...I don't really like shirtless men...

I actually didn't know he was still alive, supposedly working with members of the Roots.
Still my heart belongs to Jackie Wilson.

3 FROM THE TURTLE
shuffle and write. 3 more from the turtle...
1.WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO? - THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN
Upon first hearing this song on a mix called "Marti's Bleeding Randomness Vol. 6" I found it interesting. Travis Morrison's vocals for the verses are loser lazy, his lyrics are sarcastic and witty:
"I lost my membership card to the
human race so don't forget the face
because I know that I do belong here"
the guitars make this such a different song. Rhythm guitar constantly hitting the awkward notes, and the lead guitar and bass guitar filling in the voids with simple riffs.
Morrisons vocals really come out strong on the chorus pleading "WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY? WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO? TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I STILL LOVE YOU?"
From EMERGENCY & I

2. MONKEY - GEORGE MICHAEL
God I wish he would straighten up! This man is amazing! Its my hidden secret that I love me some George Michael. This song however upon its release scared me. It is from the album FAITH and of course it was 1987 and at 8 years old I just didn't understand what the monkey was! I think the beat was a bit too much for my little brain to consume.

So here instead is one of my fav. George Michael moments that STILL gives me goosebumps. Freddy Mercury tribute performing "Somebody to Love" with the remaining members of Queen. I remember when I first saw it: Upper West Side at my friend Yaron's house. Smoking a joint. He played the guitar as well. And I remember him asking me if I had seen it. He had it on video and that was that. Can you say "MASSIVE CROWD PARTICIPATION?"
3. I'M A FOOL - AMERICAN HI-FI
A garage power pop band, with the lead singer/guitarist Stacey Jones paying homage to all things rock n roll. Stacey use to be the drummer for Boston band Letters to Cleo and then Chicago band Veruca Salt. Like Dave Grohl he just couldn't stay seated!
This is off their self titled debut, and its just full of loud rock songs. I usually hate bands like this, its been done before we know.. but since I have a history of loving bands that Stacey has been in, I had to get it.
always an invitation when he yells "YOU CAN HUM ALONG!"

R.I.P

I have titled this:
"01101101"
Oh Jerry Falwell. You hated me because of who I LOVE and now I say REST IN PEACE.
You scared me during the middle of the night - flipping buttons and trying to rest.
Every time I heard you speak for 3 seconds of disgust - it was of conspiracy towards Left angel wings and global melting. Don't you have anything better to discuss. "Paranoia will write the world prayer" I was shocked to hear - thinking you and your teachings would live forever - and the day would never come..I can't say I am sad. Actually - you knocked me up; with HOPE.

"rid of me"
Tie yourself to me
No one else
No, you're not rid of me
you're not rid of me
Night and day I breathe
Hey, you're not rid of me
I beg you, my darling
Don't leave me, I'm hurting
Lick my legs I'm on fire
Lick my legs of desire
I'll tie your legs
Keep you against my chest
Oh, you're not rid of me
Yeah, you're not rid of me
I'll make you lick my injuries
I'm gonna twist your head off, see
Till you say don't you wish you never never met her?
Don't you don't you wish you never never met her?
I beg you my darling
Don't leave me, I'm hurting
Big lonely above everything
Above everyday, I'm hurting
Lick my legs, I'm on fire
Lick my legs of desire
Yeah, you're not rid of me
I'll make you lick my injuries
I'm gonna twist your head off, see
Till you say don't you wish you never never met her

"I CRY WOLF"
I had the craziest dream last night. I was walking in the open forest - I knew I had a destination - and noticed a wolfpack coming towards me..I thought I could sneak passed them, but they were a hungry bunch - (Insert Marky Mark joke here). I immediately turned around and noticed a house with a yard and in the yard was a medium sized dog. the dog was inside a large circle cage with the fence being about 8 feet high (thats tall in marti standards) I dashed towards it and the wolf pack was about to cut me off and most likely devour me. I climbed the fence and sat on top while the wolf pack nipped at my feet.

All the while I am trying to fight off the dog inside the cage and hoping that someone from inside the house comes out to help me (nobody came) So what seemed like forever of these wolves attempting to attack me, they grow tired. There is a dominant male in the bunch and he kind of grows bored - I jump down thinking I can escape...they get angry but don't attack. They come towards me, the medium sized dog escapes the fence and jumps in my arms. I put him back and walk out towards the openess with the wolfpack. I swear the dominant male was talking to me - something about ____________________ & __________________________. They watched me as I walked away, coming back from where I started. Not to my destination.

-----
So I looked up what this could mean online (dork)
"The Romans and Egyptians saw the wolf as a creature representing valor, and made the wolf a guardian of many sacred temples. Joseph Campbell points out that these guardians serve a universal function around the world of protecting the unprepared from entering the sacred temenos or space. In this sense, the sacred space is that area reserved for what Rudolph Otto calls the "Numinous" or the powerfully Holy, and it is terrible for those who are not ready, but a great transformational place for those who have been prepared. In modern civilization we don't make people enter these transformational places unless there is a good reason.
Alcoholics & drug addicts, for example, enter via therapy to gain the power to change their habits. The therapists, like the Guardian at the Gate, are often seen as monsters who ask us horrible questions we don't want to talk about. However, after undertaking the journey, we see the wolves (and the therapists) as allies and supporters of our newly gained awareness.
There is a book out that is fairly popular called The Women Who Run With Wolves. It is an example of a new movement in feminism that ties in with ecology and earth based neo-paganism. I mention this here not only because of the delightful wolf and goddess symbolism that make up the book, but also the idea of recovery of the feminine animal. Too often it is the man that is seen as having all the beast characteristics and energies. In the Goddess movement, there is an attempt to recover the natural and animal in the feminine
Which is so bizarre because I have been thinking of attempting to stop drinking. Or going and checking out an AA meeting. I know, I know its all the rage these days.
and
To see a wolf in your dream, symbolizes beauty, solitude, mystery, self-confidence and pride. You are a loner by choice."
I just love the loner part.

3 FROM THE TURTLE
I decided to start a new blog, one that actually gets updated - we will see how long that lasts..
So to start it off I want to do a weekly post (saw this somewhere else) putting the ITUNES on shuffle and writing about the first three songs that play. It could be interesting..especially since I would like PAPER MACHETE to cover all things PRETTY and DIRTY.
1. ELEVATION by TELEVISION
The intro to me starts off as a theme song to some mystery program, and developing into really showing off Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyds guitar techniques. Being a guitar player myself I immediatly wanted to teach myself how to play the chord progression around the chorus. I can never tell what Verlaine is speaking of in his lyrics, I just kind of mumble along with my best immitation. The guitar at the end reminds me of a distress signal.
2. JACKIE BLUE by SMASHING PUMPKINS
I knew this song existed on my itunes, yet I really did not want to listen to it. I actually like a lot of smashing pumpkins songs, BUT I love the original by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils circa '75. So even after listening to the cover, the only thing I like about it is James Iha's guitar solo - in all its static glory.

3. POPULAR by NADA SURF
Clever. Catchy. Rockin! When this song came out I was in highschool. To tell you the truth I didn't run out and get the album..I wasn't sold on it yet and I was way more into Superdrag. Eventually giving it a listen and was hooked! Songs that killed "Popular" and one of my favorites of Nada Surf even to this day - "Stale Mate" and "Zen Brain"

Let me know what you all think about these three songs. I also want to find a way to post the actually songs for people listening pleasure. If you know how to do that...write me.
Thanks.
